The Yokoyama Taikan Memorial Museum is a museum that preserves the legacy of Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1953), a giant who significantly shaped the development of modern Japanese painting. It is the former home of Taikan himself, and the entire site—the "Yokoyama Taikan Former Residence and Garden"—is designated as a National Historic Site and a Place of Scenic Beauty. Yokoyama Taikan was a painter who lived through the transformative Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. A student of Okakura Tenshin, he faced the challenge of expressing the Eastern spirit amidst rapid Westernization. He developed the "Moro-tai" (vague style) technique, which, despite initial criticism, opened new horizons for Japanese painting. This museum is the very residence that supported his artistic life, allowing visitors to feel the historical atmosphere of the man who led the Japanese art world.
