Yokote Koen is a comprehensive urban park located in Yokote City, Akita Prefecture. It was masterfully designed by the famous Meiji-era landscape architect, Yasuo Nagaoka. This site holds deep historical significance as it was once the location of the main enclosure (Honmaru) of Yokote Castle. Because of this, locals affectionately refer to the area as "Oshiroyama" (Castle Hill). The park is dotted with structures that serve as symbols of the region's historical landscape.
The history of this park is rooted in its past as the site of the Yokote Castle main enclosure. During the Meiji era, the landscape was shaped by the hand of the renowned designer Yasuo Nagaoka, adding a layer of artistic and cultural prestige to the site. This historical background has allowed the park to serve as a vital cultural hub for local residents for generations. The scenery is carefully maintained to preserve the historical atmosphere of the former castle site for modern visitors.

The most prominent feature of the park is the Yokote Castle Mock Castle Tower (Mogi Tenshu). This structure serves a dual purpose: it functions as a local history museum and a scenic observation deck. Visitors can learn about the regional history through its exhibits while enjoying the view. Additionally, the very layout and topography of the park, shaped by the original landscape design, offer a unique aesthetic experience.
The park is a public space that is open to the public at all times. Because the landscape was designed with a specific sense of topography, the scenery offers a different expression with every season. You can enjoy the changing natural beauty of the park throughout the year, whether you are visiting for a quick stroll or a deeper cultural exploration.

Within the park, you can encounter various structures based on traditional landscaping techniques. Inside the Mock Castle Tower, visitors can explore exhibits that detail the history of the local area. The tower also serves as an excellent observation point, providing a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape from an elevated vantage point.
Yokote Koen is situated in the heart of Yokote City, Akita. The surrounding area features several sites related to the local history and culture, making it an ideal starting point for a walking route to explore the historical context of the former castle site.

Since the park features natural terrain and historical structures, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes suitable for uneven ground. Please check local signage for specific rules regarding the use of facilities and museum hours.
