Yokone Kogen is a rich natural area situated at an altitude of approximately 1,300 meters. The region is characterized by its spectacular views from peaks such as Hosakuyama, Yokone-yama, and Katsunuma. One of its most striking features is the 'Iwaumi' (Rock Sea), a unique landscape of massive granite boulders several meters in diameter, which is designated as a local natural monument. The pristine environment makes it an exceptional destination for hiking and nature observation.
To help visitors explore the area, several well-maintained hiking trails have been established. Key attractions include the Ido Wetland, Godan Falls, and a unique geological formation known as the 'Elephant's Trunk.' As you traverse these spots, you can observe the shifting colors of the landscape through the seasons. It is a place where you can truly connect with nature through all five senses—listening to the calls of wild birds and insects, and seeing the seasonal wildflowers.
The scenery and plant life change dramatically depending on the season. A particularly popular time to visit is in May, when various species of azaleas bloom simultaneously at the Ido Wetland. In winter, the area offers a serene and unique snowy landscape. Because the natural environment is highly seasonal, it is highly recommended to check the latest local information before your visit to ensure you see the best of the season.
Hiking is the primary activity here. A popular route is the circular path of approximately 4.7km starting from the Maenikko Highland Lodge. This route takes you past scenic landmarks like the Elephant's Trunk lookout and the Ido Wetland. The experience focuses on slow-paced walking, nature observation, and enjoying the peaceful mountain scenery.
The area around the plateau features several points of interest that showcase the charm of Kanuma City. Nearby, you can find the Sotaizo-jin stone statues and the Maenikko Brewery, a unique facility renovated from a former school building. Please note that when driving to the area, you should check for any road closures or traffic restrictions, particularly regarding Prefectural Road 246.
As this is a high-altitude plateau, please come prepared with sturdy walking shoes and appropriate outdoor gear. The weather and terrain can change rapidly, so dress in layers. To protect the local ecosystem, please follow all established rules: hiking with pets (including dogs) is strictly prohibited. Additionally, as this is a habitat for wild animals such as bears and deer, please remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times.
