Zoorasia, located in Asahi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, is one of Japan's largest urban-style zoos. The name is a combination of "Zoo" and "Eurasia," reflecting its core theme: "The Symbiosis of Life and Harmony with Nature." This concept creates a sense of a vast, natural landscape where visitors can feel truly connected to the wild.
The most striking feature of Zoorasia is how faithfully it reproduces the natural habitats of its inhabitants. The zoo is divided into eight distinct zones based on global climatic regions, utilizing local flora and topography to create authentic environments. Instead of high fences, the zoo utilizes wide "moats" to separate animals from visitors. This design allows for much closer and safer observation of natural behaviors, making you feel as though you are watching wildlife in the wild.
Since its opening in 1999, Zoorasia has evolved from a local project into a vital center for biodiversity. It plays a crucial role in the conservation of endangered species, working alongside the Yokohama City Breeding Center. The facility is known for its advanced breeding techniques and research, such as the successful breeding of the Tsushima Leopard Cat and the management of highly sensitive species like the Indian Lion. Zoorasia reveals a different face with every season. In spring, you can see animals becoming active alongside the budding plants, while summer offers a lush, green retreat. Autumn brings a beautiful display of changing foliage.
We recommend arriving in the morning right after the zoo opens. Animals are generally most active during the early hours, and visiting before the temperature rises is much more comfortable. On clear days, the bright sunlight makes for excellent photography of the animals and the scenic landscapes.
Beyond just viewing animals, the zoo offers immersive experiences. Areas like the "Playful Forest" allow children to interact closely with nature. The use of moats provides a unique perspective, making you feel as if you are part of the natural environment.
