Yokohama Kanteibyo is a historic temple situated within the vibrant Yokohama Chinatown. The opening of Yokohama Port was a major turning point in the city's history. Following the port's opening in 1859, many Chinese residents settled in the Yamashita-cho area to build their lives and livelihoods. The deity Guan Sheng Di Jun, who was deified over generations, continues to be a central figure of respect and worship today.
The most striking feature of this temple is its traditional architectural style and the solemn atmosphere of its worship spaces. While standard opening hours are generally 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, the temple observes special hours during significant events. For example, on New Year's Eve, the temple remains open until 3:00 AM, and on New Year's Day, it operates from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Additionally, during the celebration of Guan Di's birthday (the 24th day of the 6th lunar month), large-scale parades are held in Chinatown, offering a perfect time to witness the lively cultural festivities.
Visitors can experience traditional worship practices guided by established customs. While caution regarding fire is necessary inside the main hall, you can purchase incense for 500 JPY at the reception. After lighting the incense, follow the traditional etiquette of waving your hand to extinguish the flame rather than blowing on it with your breath. You can connect with various deities, such as the Jade Emperor, Guan Sheng Di Jun, Dimu Niangniang, Guanyin Bodhisattva, and Fude Zhengshen, through these ritualistic steps.
