The Yokohama Anpanman Children's Museum is a multi-purpose facility themed around the famous character Anpanman, located in the Minato Mirai district of Nishi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Originally opened in 2007, the museum moved to its current location in the 61st Block in 2019 following a renewal. The facility is divided into two main sections: the 1st-floor "Shop & Food/Restaurant" area and the 2nd/3rd-floor "Museum" area. While the 1st floor is free to enter and features various shops and eateries, the 3rd-floor Museum area is a paid indoor playground. As an all-weather facility, it provides a comfortable and safe environment for families with small children regardless of the weather.
The museum holds a significant place among Anpanman-themed facilities in Japan. After its initial opening in the 48th Block of Minato Mirai in 2007, the museum relocated to the 61st Block on July 7, 2019, due to land lease agreements. This move allowed the facility to expand to a total floor area of approximately 14,000 m², evolving into a much more enriched experience. Today, it serves as a community-rooted space where children can develop their senses through the world of Anpanman.
The museum is filled with diverse areas that recreate the world of Anpanman. The 3rd-floor Museum area includes zones like the Bread Factory, Everyone's Town, Wanpaku Island, School, Waiwai Park, and Ball Park, where children can engage in active physical play. A major highlight is the daily character show held at the "Hiroba" (Main Stage), which draws crowds of families every day. On the 1st floor, visitors can enjoy the world of the characters even more deeply through dining and shopping at Uncle Jam's Bread Factory, the Anpanman Restaurant, and various souvenir shops.
Since this is an indoor facility, it is a great destination regardless of the season. Visiting during long school holidays like summer or spring break is popular among local families. The museum generally operates from 10:00 to 17:00 (or 18:00), but since the last admission is at 16:00, we recommend arriving with plenty of time to spare. To make the most of your visit, try to be there during the daytime to catch the character shows on the main stage. Note that the 1st-floor restaurant area is free to enter, making it a convenient spot for a quick lunch or break even if you do not enter the paid museum area.
The Museum area focuses on active play rather than just observation. Children can run around and stay active in areas like Ball Park and Wanpaku Island. Watching the character shows is an essential part of the experience. Additionally, the shop area offers a wide variety of Anpanman merchandise, allowing children to bring a piece of the magic home with them. These activities are designed to create lasting memories for young visitors.
Located within the Yokohama Minato Mirai 21 district, the museum is surrounded by many famous sightseeing spots. The nearby bay area offers beautiful scenery and several shopping malls, making it an ideal stop during a day of sightseeing. The location is easily accessible via public transportation and is a convenient addition to any Yokohama travel itinerary.
As the facility focuses on indoor activities, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for the season. Since children will be running around and playing on the floor in certain areas, easy-to-remove shoes and activewear are highly recommended. Please be mindful of other guests and maintain good manners in this public space.
