Located on the 14th floor of the Yokkaichi Port Building, "Umiteras 14" is an observation and exhibition space dedicated to the stunning views of the Yokkaichi industrial complex. This site was officially recognized in 2015 as a "Japan Nightscape Heritage" (Facility-type Nightscape Heritage). From this high vantage point, you can witness the iconic scenery of Yokkaichi Port. During the day, the area offers a vast panorama stretching from the Suzuka Mountains toward Nagoya, while at night, it transforms into a mesmerizing landscape of light created by the industrial zone's illumination.
Yokkaichi Port has long flourished as a vital logistics hub. The facility features exhibition corners that introduce the history of how Yokkaichi Port developed into a modern port, the various roles the port plays today, and the nature of the work performed here. It is an educational space where visitors can visually learn about the regional history that has grown alongside the development of the industrial complex and the current industrial activities.
The observation deck provides a 360-degree view of the Yokkaichi industrial area. The nighttime scenery is particularly striking, characterized by a landscape of light from illuminated plants, container yards, and chimneys. Inside the building, there are themed exhibition sections such as "The History of the Port," "The Role of the Port," "Working at the Port," and "Living with the Port." These sections use large-scale video displays and models to help visitors understand the functions and history of the port.
You can enjoy the views year-round, but if you wish to see the industrial nightscape, please pay close attention to the operating hours on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. While the facility closes at 17:00 on weekdays, it remains open until 21:00 on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Please note that the indoor lights are dimmed 10 minutes before closing time, so plan your photography and viewing accordingly.
The observation room is an excellent spot for photography. For those wishing to take professional-quality photos, you can borrow a suction-cup black cloth (limited to 5 sets) at the reception for free to reduce reflections. Tripods are also permitted, provided they are used at a height lower than the handrails. Additionally, the exhibition area offers a deep dive into the history of Yokkaichi Port through large-scale video presentations.
The area surrounding Yokkaichi Port is well-equipped with facilities to learn about the port's role and history. The Port Building itself serves as a tourism hub, making the surrounding area an excellent place to experience industrial heritage and the mechanics of global logistics.
■ Payment: Credit cards and cash are accepted for admission fees.
■ English Support: Most displays and signs are in Japanese; English support is limited.
■ Reservations: No advance reservation is required for individuals, though groups should contact the facility in advance.
■ Photography: If using a tripod, it must be kept below the height of the handrails. Using the free black cloth from the reception is highly recommended to minimize reflections.
■ Pets: Pets are not allowed inside the facility.
■ What to Bring: A camera with specialized gear for low-light photography is recommended to fully capture the industrial nightscape.
