Yokeiji is a Tendai Buddhist temple located in Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture. Situated in a beautiful satoyama (woodland) area at an altitude of approximately 60 meters, it has long been revered as a significant local temple. With a history spanning over 1,270 years, the temple houses numerous precious cultural assets designated by the national, prefectural, and municipal governments, including the central deity, the Thousand-Armed Kannon. The temple grounds feature a historic landscape composed of the Main Hall, a Three-Story Pagoda, a Bell Tower, and an Octagonal Hall.
The history of this temple is ancient, said to have been founded by Honen Daishi in 749 AD. The name "Yokei" is derived from the phrase in the I Ching, "Yokei ari wa kitto ari," which suggests that those who accumulate good deeds will inevitably receive blessings and happiness. Originally, a Yakushi-do hall was located at the foot of the mountain, but it was moved to the current elevated location to protect it from the ravages of war. Today, many of the temple's structures, including the Main Hall, Three-Story Pagoda, and Bell Tower, are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
The temple grounds are dotted with numerous historic structures. Visitors can explore the Main Hall housing the Thousand-Armed Kannon, the Three-Story Pagoda, the Bell Tower, the Octagonal Hall, and various other halls such as the Yakushi-do, Jizo-do, Amida-do, and Jusanbutsu-do. Each building serves a unique spiritual role and has been meticulously preserved through the centuries. A special highlight is the annual "Temple Treasure Exhibition," where rare and precious artifacts and cultural assets that are usually kept hidden from the public are displayed for visitors to see.
Visitors can enjoy different landscapes throughout the year. In April, the "Cherry Blossom Festival" is held, often featuring traditional performances such as Wadaiko (Japanese drumming) by local high school students amidst the blooming sakura. In autumn, the temple hosts the "Treasure Exhibition" and the "Momiji (Maple) Cafe" to coincide with the vibrant autumn foliage, offering a chance to experience history alongside the changing colors. During the New Year period (December 31 to January 3), various rituals such as Okiyome (purification) and Goma fire prayers are conducted.
To deepen the understanding of Buddhism, the temple periodically hosts educational lectures. These may include workshops on Goshuin (temple stamps) and Sutra copying, or even creative sessions led by Japanese painters. Seasonal events like the autumn "Momiji Cafe" and the local "Yokeiji Marche" also provide wonderful opportunities to engage with the local culture and nature while visiting the temple.
