Yokokan Nagaya (French Pavilion) is a historic Western-style residence located in the Kitano district of Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, themed around French culture and art. The building is uniquely structured with two symmetrical buildings connected by a central staircase, a design that earned it the name 'Yokokan Nagaya' (Western-style Row House). Inside, visitors can immerse themselves in a sophisticated atmosphere featuring exquisite glasswork by Art Nouveau masters, Napoleonic-era furniture, and antique Louis Vuitton trunks from the late 19th century, all of which evoke the artistic elegance of France.
Originally constructed in 1908 as an apartment for foreign residents in the Kobe foreign settlement, the building was later moved to its current location in the Kitano area. The architecture is quite rare, consisting of two symmetrical structures joined together, blending the Western mansion style with the Japanese 'nagaya' (row house) concept. It is recognized as a designated traditional building of Kobe and serves as an important piece of the city's historical architectural landscape.
The greatest draw of the pavilion is its diverse collection related to French artistry. You can observe the delicate beauty of glasswork by renowned Art Nouveau artists such as Émile Gallé, the Daum brothers, and the Müller brothers up close. The collection also includes historical treasures like furniture from the Napoleonic era and antique Louis Vuitton trunks designed for 19th-century sea travel. Additionally, the museum displays highly artistic furnishings, such as the 'Petal Sofa' with its outward-facing seat design.
The Yokokan Nagaya offers a timeless encounter with French art regardless of the season. Across the street, you will find the 'Former Drewell House (German House)' and the 'Former US Consulate Residence (Kobe Kitano Museum)'. As the exhibits are extremely delicate and valuable, please do not touch any of the displays. Because the building features stairs and uneven floor levels, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please also observe all rules regarding photography to protect the precious antique collection.
