Located in Motobu, Kunigami District, Okinawa, "Yohena Ajisaien" (Yohena Hydrangea Garden) is a spectacular garden featuring approximately 10,000 hydrangea plants. Originally started with just two small plants, the garden has grown into a vast, lush landscape. It offers a unique opportunity to witness how hydrangeas thrive in a tropical, subtropical environment.
The garden's history is deeply personal, beginning with a single woman who started with only two hydrangea plants. Over the years, the scale has expanded to roughly 10,000 plants, becoming a cherished local landmark. The garden's significance is even recognized in academic circles; its history and the nature of tropical hydrangeas have been subjects of research and papers by the Vice President of the Japan Hydrangea Association.
Visitors can enjoy a diverse range of hydrangea varieties that change beautifully depending on the season and weather. A highlight of the visit is the "Ajisaien Cafe" located within the garden. The cafe offers a variety of seasonal treats and refreshments, including ice cream, hot drinks, shaved ice (kakigori), zenzai (sweet red bean soup), and even pizza pies, making it a perfect spot to relax.
The peak blooming season for hydrangeas is primarily from April to July. Because blooming patterns can vary each year based on weather, it is highly recommended to check the latest status before your visit. The garden is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (or 6:30 PM depending on the season). For the best experience, visit during the bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the vibrant colors. The garden remains open even during rainy weather, though please note that conditions may change.

After your walk, enjoy the local flavors at the on-site cafe, which serves snacks and drinks inspired by Okinawan ingredients and styles. The garden is situated near the center of the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa. This area is a popular base for exploring the northern part of the main island, and traveling by car is the most common method. It is located approximately 18 km (about a 30-minute drive) from the Kyoda Interchange on the Okinawa Expressway.
Since the garden is set in a natural environment, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Regarding parking, the area can become quite crowded on Saturdays and Sundays. To avoid congestion on local roads, consider visiting on weekdays or using a tour bus/group transport. Dedicated parking is available for both passenger cars and buses. When dining at the cafe, please follow local health and safety guidelines (such as
