Yasuragi Tei is a waterfront embankment area located along the lower reaches of the Shinano River in Chuo-ku, Niigata City. Developed starting in the 1980s, it is famous for its pioneering '5-percent slope' design, which created an exceptionally gentle and wide incline. This design allows the embankment to serve as much more than just a flood control structure; it is a vast, accessible green space where visitors can connect with nature. With a height of approximately 2m and a width of up to 15m, the area offers an expansive, open feeling that lets you feel the gentle flow of the Shinano River up close.
The Niigata region has historically been vulnerable to flooding and tsunamis due to its low-lying terrain. Following the significant damage caused by the 1964 Niigata earthquake, river management became a priority. The current Yasuragi Tei was developed as part of a national river improvement project to strengthen disaster prevention. However, the design uniquely integrates urban life with nature, creating a beautiful green belt that serves the community while maintaining high-level flood protection.
The most striking feature is the vast, open landscape and the incredibly gentle slope. The developed section stretches approximately 4.5km from the vicinity of the Kamiya diversion channel to Bandai Bridge, offering lush greenery on both sides. The area changes beautifully with the seasons and frequently serves as a venue for large-scale local events. Whether you are watching the river flow or simply enjoying the breeze, the combination of water and greenery makes this one of Niigata's most iconic natural landmarks.
The scenery shifts beautifully throughout the year. In spring (early to late April), you can enjoy the seasonal blooms, including cherry blossoms and tulips through early May. Daytime is perfect for a refreshing stroll in the gentle river breeze, while the evening offers a more tranquil atmosphere as the light reflects off the water. At night, the area takes on a unique character as the city lights mingle with the river's reflection.
Rather than specific facilities, the primary activity here is simply being in nature. The wide-open spaces are ideal for walking, jogging, or relaxing on a bench. The area's scale also makes it a popular spot for community gatherings and local festivals. It is a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and find a moment of peace.
Located in the heart of Niigata City, Yasuragi Tei is close to many convenient sightseeing and shopping spots. It is easily accessible from JR Niigata Station via bus, and it is a short distance from historical sites like Hakusan Park and various cultural facilities. With many hotels and restaurants nearby, it also serves as an excellent rest stop during your city tour.
As this is a large outdoor green space, please dress comfortably and wear walking shoes suitable for a stroll. While the area is a public space, having cash on hand is useful if you plan to use nearby parking or vending machines. To preserve this beautiful environment, please follow local etiquette by taking your trash home and respecting the natural surroundings. As English signage may be limited, having a map or digital navigation ready is recommended.
