The Kan Yasuda Sculpture Museum (Arte Piazza Biei) is a cultural exchange space in Biei, Hokkaido, centered around the works of sculptor Kan Yasuda. The name "Arte Piazza" is Italian for "Art Plaza." Built upon the grounds of the former Sai Elementary School, the site spans over 70,000 m². It features more than 40 sculptures, ranging from massive marble pieces weighing over 10 tons to delicate works displayed within the old school building. This space is designed as a place where visitors can detach from daily life and find a sense of freedom and inner peace through the harmony of art and nature.
The history of this site is deeply connected to the transformation of Biei, once a thriving coal-mining town. The former Sai Elementary School, which opened in 1949 and once housed 1,250 students, closed in 1981. The sculptor Kan Yasuda, a native of Biei, discovered this wooden school building while searching for an atelier in Japan. Inspired by the sight of local children, Yasuda envisioned a place where children could expand their hearts and minds, breathing new life into the site as an "Art Plaza." Since its opening in 1992, it has served as a vital cultural hub and a venue for world-class sculpture. In 2016, it was officially registered as a museum under the Museum Act.
The grounds are dotted with diverse sculptural works and unique spaces. Key areas include the "Water Plaza (Stage)" where water and sculpture harmonize, the serene "Trifoglio Plaza," and the Sculpture Hill. Additionally, the second floor of the old school building serves as a community gallery, while the old gymnasium has been repurposed into an art space for concerts and events.
