Yassai Hossai is a traditional festival held every December at Ishizu Oji Shrine, located in Nishi-ku, Sakai City, Osaka. This event is characterized by its unique ritualistic forms rooted in local history and legends, most notably the dramatic sight of burning firewood and the spiritual fire-walking ceremony. As a deeply-rooted cultural event, it draws many spectators to witness the powerful connection between the community and its traditions.
The origins of this festival are tied to an ancient legend. It is said that when the deity Ebisu (the god of prosperity and sea) arrived at Ishizu Beach, local fishermen burned 108 bundles of firewood to warm the deity. To recreate this legend, a large pile of sacred wood called 'Tonto' is ignited. The ritual where a person chosen from the villagers, known as 'Ebisu-san,' performs the 'fire walking' (fire crossing) amidst the shouts of 'Yassai Hossai' is a vital cultural heritage that preserves the historical narrative of this region for modern generations.
The absolute highlight of the festival is the fire-walking ritual. The moment the flames are lit on the piled firewood and the participants pass through the intense heat is the most iconic and symbolic scene of the event. Additionally, the festive atmosphere is enhanced by various food stalls and street vendors set up around the area. Yassai Hossai is held annually in December. Because it takes place during the winter, temperatures can be quite low.
