Yase no Dangai is a scenic spot in Shika Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, characterized by its steep, towering cliffs. This location is widely recognized as a filming site for Seicho Matsumoto's masterpiece, 'The Zero Focus,' drawing interest from cinema enthusiasts. From the precipice, you can gaze out over the vast, endless horizon of the Sea of Japan, witnessing the sublime beauty of natural rock formations. The name 'Yase' is said to derive from local legends, either referring to the thin, barren soil of the area or the feeling of one's body becoming 'thin' (yaseru) from the sheer awe of standing on the edge.
The area is deeply connected to historical legends. Most notably, the site is tied to the lore of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Benkei. According to legend, in the year 1185, Yoshitsune hid his fleet in the nearby inlet to evade pursuers. This inlet is known as 'Yoshitsune no Fune-kakushi' (Yoshitsune's Hidden Boat), and it is said that 48 ships were once concealed there. This natural topography has served as a stage for historical drama for centuries. The connection to the film 'The Zero Focus' adds a layer of modern cultural significance to the site.
