Yanagi Matsuri is one of the largest summer festivals in the Tajima region, held annually on August 1st and 2nd in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture. This historic event has been celebrated since 1935 as the annual festival of Yanagi-no-miya Shrine, which serves as the guardian of Toyoka's famous local specialties: Yanagi-kori (willow basketry) and Toyoka bags. Every year, approximately 60,000 visitors gather to experience the intense energy and deep-rooted traditions of the local community.
The central Yanagi-no-miya Shrine honors the deities that protect the development of the region's traditional crafts, specifically willow basketry and high-quality bags. Since its inception in the early Showa era, the festival has become a vital pillar of the local community. It is much more than a seasonal event; it is a profound cultural ritual that connects the industrial heritage of Toyoka with spiritual devotion.
The festival features a variety of traditional ceremonies. It begins with the grand rituals at Yanagi-no-miya Shrine, followed by the majestic procession of portable shrines (mikoshi) and a ceremonial procession of children (chigo) dressed in traditional attire. From the evening, the streets of Daikai-dori (Toyoka Station Shopping Street) come alive with the 'Toyoka Odori' dance, performed by approximately 2,000 dancers. The absolute climax occurs on the night of August 2nd, when about 2,000 fireworks illuminate the night sky in a brilliant display.
Since the festival takes place on August 1st and 2nd, you will be visiting during the peak of the Japanese summer. The atmosphere becomes most electric from evening to night. The night of the 2nd is particularly popular as crowds gather to witness the grand firework finale. During the hot daytime hours, you can enjoy the local shopping streets and the 'Kaban-nomi no Ichi' (Bag Market) while preparing for the main evening festivities.
Visitors can immerse themselves in the culture of Toyoka through various activities. You can watch the energetic Toyoka Odori dance up close along Daikai-dori. At the 'Kaban-nomi no Ichi' near the Toyoka City Hall, you can discover and purchase high-quality local bags and crafts. Additionally, the many food stalls (yatai) scattered throughout the streets offer a classic taste of Japanese festival food and drink.
The festival is centered in the heart of Toyoka City. Key locations include the Daikai-dori shopping district, the area in front of Toyoka City Hall, Toyoka Central Park, and the plaza in front of the Toyoka City General Gymnasium. Surrounding areas like Kaban Street, Toyoda Shopping Street, and Teramachi Shopping Street also become lively hubs for food stalls and events.
As this is an outdoor summer event, heat protection is essential. We highly recommend bringing plenty of water, a hat, and a parasol. Since you will be moving through crowded streets, comfortable walking shoes are a must.
