The Yamate No. 234 Building is a historic Western-style residence located in Yamate-cho, Naka Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Completed in 1927, this two-story wooden structure is characterized by a symmetrical layout with a central entrance. It originally served as residential housing for foreign residents. Today, it is a public facility within Motomachi Park, open to the public free of charge.
This building holds a significant place in the history of post-earthquake reconstruction. Following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, which destroyed many structures, this residence was built to provide housing for foreign residents. After its completion in 1927, the building went through various stages, including a period of use by occupation forces after World War II, and continued to serve as an apartment for foreign residents until around 1980. In 1989, the City of Yokohama acquired the building, and it was officially designated as a Yokohama City-certified historical building in 1999.
The interior of the building features exhibits that convey the lifestyle of the era. In the living room and dining area on the first floor (left side), period-appropriate furniture is arranged to recreate the atmosphere of a home from that time. On the right side of the first floor, a scale model of the building as it originally appeared is on display. The second floor is often utilized as a space for various exhibitions and events. The architectural style is notable for its symmetrical structure around the central entrance and its traditional roof design with cement tiles, preserving the charm of the early 20th century.
To fully appreciate the texture of the wooden architecture, the arrangement of the furniture, and the natural lighting through the light court (kotei), we recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours. While admission is free, please note the operating hours are from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
Visitors can walk through the historic structure to learn about the architecture and culture of former foreign residential areas. By observing the living room on the first floor, you can experience how furniture was arranged and how people lived during that period. The second floor occasionally hosts special events and exhibitions, offering a dynamic way to engage with the space.

You can enjoy a scenic stroll to nearby historic sites such as the Elisman House and Berick Hall, located along the Yamate Hon-dori street, making it a perfect part of a walking tour.
