The Yamataka Jindai-zakura, located at Jisso-ji Temple in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, is an ancient Edohigan-type cherry tree estimated to be approximately 2,000 years old. Recognized as one of the Three Great Cherry Trees of Japan, it is also designated as a National Natural Monument. Beyond being a mere botanical specimen, this tree has long been a subject of reverence, symbolizing the enduring strength of life. Surrounding the ancient giant are approximately 30 Yoshino cherry trees, creating a sweeping landscape of pink blossoms every spring.
The history of this tree is deeply rooted in legend. It is said that the legendary hero Yamato Takeru planted this tree during his expedition to the eastern provinces. Furthermore, historical records mention that during the Kamakura period, the Buddhist monk Nichiren visited this site and prayed for the tree's recovery when its vitality appeared to wane. Because of this, it is sometimes referred to as the 'Myoho Sakura.' Despite surviving numerous natural disasters throughout the centuries, the tree continues to stand strong, spreading its branches wide. It was officially designated as a National Natural Monument in 1922.
The primary draw is the sheer presence of the 2,000-year-old giant. With a height of approximately 10 meters and a trunk circumference of about 12 meters, its massive form serves as a testament to the passage of time. Another extraordinary feature is the presence of the 'Space Sakura.' This refers to a descendant of the Jindai-zakura seeds that traveled aboard a space shuttle in 2008, returning to Earth after a stay in space. Observing this unique fusion of ancient nature and modern science is a truly rare experience.
The peak blooming season is typically around April 7th and lasts for about one week. During this time, the sight of the ancient Jindai-zakura in full bloom alongside the surrounding Yoshino cherry trees is nothing short of spectacular. If you are lucky enough to see the white-capped Southern Alps in the background, the view becomes even more breathtaking. Daytime is the best time for photography, as the bright sunlight makes the delicate colors of the petals stand out vividly.

Jisso-ji Temple is located in Takawa-cho, Hokuto City, an area surrounded by lush natural beauty, making it ideal for scenic drives and walks. Please note that roads can become very crowded during the peak cherry blossom season, so we recommend checking your route in advance. When using a car navigation system, please enter 'Jisso-ji' rather than 'Jindai-zakura' to ensure you reach the correct destination.
