Yamanashi Prefectural Makiba Park is a vast highland park located in the Yatsugatake foothills, spanning altitudes from 1,100m to 1,700m. Situated at a high elevation of 1,400m, it boasts a location often described as a "heavenly restaurant with a view," offering breathtaking vistas of Mt. Fuji and the Southern Alps. The expansive pastures and fresh air make it a perfect place to reconnect with nature.
This region has a long history of livestock farming and ranching. The park is part of a specialized agricultural area where the prefecture raises high-quality beef cattle (Japanese Black cattle) and maintains a healthy environment for dairy farming. It serves as a vital site that showcases the harmony between the natural landscape and Yamanashi's agricultural heritage.
The main draw is the sweeping, open landscape of the green pastures. Within the scenic white-fenced areas, you can observe sheep, goats, and cattle grazing peacefully. The backdrop of Mt. Fuji and the Southern Alps makes this a premier spot for photography enthusiasts. For a culinary experience, the "Makiba Restaurant" serves premium local ingredients, including Koshu Wine Beef, fresh highland vegetables, and fresh milk, allowing you to taste the true flavors of Yamanashi.
The park offers beautiful scenery year-round, though each season brings a different charm. From spring to summer, the pastures are vibrant and green, perfect for a refreshing breeze. In autumn, the surrounding colors shift beautifully, and in winter, the crisp, clear air provides exceptionally sharp views of Mt. Fuji. The park is open from 9:00 to 17:00, and visiting during daylight hours ensures you can fully enjoy the animal activity and the stunning scenery.
Visitors can enjoy a close-up view of animals in their natural habitat. Please note that structured activities like pony rides, cow milking, or formal feeding sessions are not available. Instead, the experience is centered on quiet observation and peaceful walks along the trails. You may enjoy a natural interaction, such as picking up some fresh grass for the sheep or goats, while strolling through the highland air.
The area is home to several famous landmarks. Seisen-ryo is a well-known destination nearby, featuring a terrace with beautiful views and a mountain museum. Additionally, the "Utsukushimori" viewpoint (at 1,541m) offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Southern Alps and Mt. Fuji. Combining these spots into your itinerary will create a complete nature-filled journey through the southern Yatsugatake region.
The park is vast, and walking the trails to the pastures may take some time. Because of the high altitude, weather can change rapidly; we recommend bringing layers to adjust to temperature shifts. Pets are welcome on leashes, but please ensure they remain leashed at all times and do not enter the actual grazing areas where the animals live. Please respect the animals and the natural environment during your visit.
