Yamamoto Fudoson (Shodozan Tokuzenyin Myoo Mitsuji) is a historic Buddhist temple located in Tanagura, Fukushima Prefecture. The approach to the temple is lined with majestic cedar trees, some over 100 years old, offering a sense of profound tranquility to all who visit. According to legend, the site is deeply connected to Kobo Daishi (Kukai), who is said to have established this place to subdue evil spirits in the Yamizo mountain range during his travels through the Tohoku region. The history of this temple dates back to the early 9th century (approximately 804–807 AD). It began with the prayers of Kobo Daishi, who sought to pacify the local spirits while traversing the Tohoku region. Since then, the temple has been cherished as a vital spiritual pillar for both local residents and travelers. The site possesses a unique way of worship that is deeply intertwined with the rugged topography of Mt. Shodo.
The approach to the temple is defined by an overwhelming presence of ancient cedar trees, many exceeding 100 years in age. As you walk through this verdant tunnel, the main hall gradually comes into view. The journey upward is marked by 130 stone steps, a structure designed to help visitors feel a sense of detachment from the mundane world with every step taken.
