Yamainudake is a mountain standing at 997.6m in Kamikatsu, Tokushima Prefecture. It is renowned as a premier destination for moss lovers, featuring a unique landscape where the ground and rocks are blanketed in thick, lush green moss. The name of the mountain is derived from a legend that the rock formations at the summit once resembled the open mouth of a mountain dog (Yama-inu). Surrounded by deciduous forests and towering cedar trees, it is a sanctuary where the artistry of nature is visible at every turn.
The area around the summit holds significant spiritual history, featuring a Daishi-do hall nestled among giant cedars and elements related to Ryuo-san Tokoji Temple. The area is also dotted with stone statues from the Mini Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, suggesting a long history of faith and deep respect for the natural world. It is a place where spiritual culture and natural beauty are seamlessly intertwined.
The most striking feature is the carpet of moss covering the ground and rocks, accompanied by scattered massive boulders. After a rainfall, the moss creates a breathtaking, emerald-green velvet-like landscape. From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Shikoku Mountains and Mount Tsurugi. Along the hiking trails, you will encounter stone Buddha statues placed naturally within the landscape, allowing for quiet contemplation of nature's sculptures.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. In spring and early summer, the fresh greenery is vibrant, while autumn brings a stunning display of colorful foliage. The harmony between the autumn leaves and the green moss creates a truly unique aesthetic. Because the trails can be steep, it is highly recommended to hike during daylight hours.
Visitors can enjoy hiking and trekking through a rich natural environment. While the trails are established, they include steep sections that require careful footing. The experience focuses on observing the textures of the moss and the unique placement of the massive boulders while enjoying the vast views of the Shikoku Mountain range.
At the foot of the mountain lies the beautiful area known as the "Kashihara Rice Terraces." You can enjoy the scenic views of these traditional terraced fields on your way toward the trailhead. The entire Kamikatsu area is a haven for nature lovers, offering many spots for forest bathing and nature observation.
Proper hiking gear is essential. Sturdy hiking boots and trekking poles are highly recommended due to the steep terrain and uneven paths. While there are no fees for using the mountain itself, please carry cash for any local transport or nearby needs. To protect this delicate ecosystem, please stay strictly on the designated paths to avoid damaging the moss and plants. The terrain near the summit is rugged, so come prepared for a physical challenge.
