Established in 1979, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art is a cornerstone of local culture, dedicated to showcasing the unique artistic heritage of Yamaguchi Prefecture. The museum operates under a philosophy of being an 'open museum' that invites community participation. It plays a vital role in uncovering and celebrating local history, such as the medieval Ouchi culture, and hosting exhibitions centered on artists with deep ties to the region. The building is a sturdy reinforced concrete structure with one basement level and two floors above ground, nestled in a tranquil environment that harmoniously blends with the surrounding natural landscape.
The museum's collection was significantly shaped by the donation of numerous works from the family of Yasuo Katsuki, a prominent painter known for his 'Siberia Series' which depicts his experiences during his internment in Siberia. This legacy allows the museum to house a prestigious collection of regional art, including works by masters like Sesshu and Kano H 画ga (associated with the Choshu domain) and the post-war painter Kazusaku Kobayashi. The institution continues to strive toward both preserving historical cultural legacies and fostering new artistic creation.
The museum features multiple exhibition spaces (labeled A through F) that host various collection displays and special exhibitions. A standout feature is the focus on artists from Yamaguchi and the medieval Ouchi culture, offering a perspective found nowhere else. The architecture itself is a highlight, providing a peaceful atmosphere within a scholarly district. Depending on the current exhibition, visitors can enjoy a wide range of genres, from traditional Japanese painting (Nihonga) to contemporary art.
The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM). Visiting during daylight hours allows you to fully appreciate the textures of the architecture and the surrounding natural scenery. The museum is located along one of Japan's 'Top 100 Park Roads' in the heart of Yamaguchi City. The surrounding area is a cultural and educational district featuring the Yamaguchi Prefectural Library, Yamaguchi Prefectural Government Office, Yamaguchi Xavier Memorial Cathedral, Yamaguchi Prefectural Yamaguchi Museum, Rurikoji Temple, and Koyama Park. To protect the artworks and maintain a pleasant environment, please observe the following rules: Please set mobile phones to silent mode and refrain from using them in exhibition rooms. Photography, video recording, and sketching are strictly prohibited. Do not touch the artworks or display cases. Eating and drinking (including water, candy, or gum) and bringing in plants or insects are not allowed. Please leave umbrellas (including parasols) in the designated storage area. The museum is equipped with accessible facilities, including wheelchair rentals, ramps, multi-function toilets, and is service-dog friendly.
