Located in the Yamada district, Yamada Himawari-en is a unique destination where you can witness the blooming of autumn sunflowers for approximately one month in November. Unlike the bright yellow sunflowers of summer, these blossoms feature a deep, rich golden-yellow hue. This scenery offers a striking color contrast, as the golden petals are set against the crisp blue skies of late autumn and the vibrant autumn colors of the surrounding Mount Takatori. In 2022, the landscape of Yamada's sunflowers and the beauty of the Haze foliage were officially recognized as a "Saga Prefecture Heritage," highlighting its cultural and natural significance.
The tradition of cultivating these sunflowers began as an initiative to revitalize and utilize abandoned terraced rice fields. Originally planted by a local community association, the cultivation and management of the fields have been passed down to a local town organization starting in 2025. This effort is part of a dedicated movement to preserve the local landscape and ensure that the area offers a changing, beautiful visage to visitors throughout the seasons.
The primary attraction is the sunflower bloom that unfolds from early to mid-November. Visitors can capture the stunning sight of golden-yellow petals against a clear blue sky, perfectly complemented by the colorful autumn leaves on the mountainside. On certain occasions, if the weather permits, you may even witness the rare sight of a light dusting of snow resting upon the sunflower heads. Because of this unique aesthetic, many photography enthusiasts gather here during weekends and public holidays when the flowers are in full bloom.
The peak season is typically about one month, from early to mid-November. Visiting during the hours when the sky is clearest will allow you to see the vivid colors of the sunflowers most sharply. Since this period coincides with the changing temperatures of late autumn, it is an ideal time to experience the transition of seasons as the autumn foliage reaches its peak.
