The Yamabiko Promenade is a scenic walking path approximately 2.5 km long, located within the breathtaking Kurobe Gorge in Toyama Prefecture. Stretching from the vicinity of Unazuki Station through Unazuki Dam toward Tochinoyu, this path allows visitors to feel the presence of the Kurobe Gorge Railway's trolley trains up close. The most iconic sight is the two red bridges—the New Yamabiko Bridge and the Old Yamabiko Bridge—which stand side-by-side, serving as a symbol of the region's landscape.
The name "Yamabiko Bridge" (Echo Bridge) originates from the way the sound of the passing trains echoes through the gorge toward the hot spring town. Parts of the path were once the actual railway tracks, which have since been renovated into a walking trail. The Old Yamabiko Bridge serves as a historical relic of the railway's past, and together with the modern New Yamabiko Bridge, it tells a story of the development and history of the Kurobe Gorge area.
The greatest highlight is the view of the New Yamabiko Bridge from the Old Yamabiko Bridge. Seeing the bright red bridge set against the deep green of the gorge as a trolley train rushes across is a sight unique to this location. The trail also features several tunnels, providing a sense of adventure as light pierces through the darkness. The changing terrain, including iron bridges and old track beds, ensures that every step of your walk offers a new and exciting perspective.

In autumn, the surrounding foliage turns vibrant colors, creating a magnificent contrast with the red bridges. The walk through the tunnels offers a unique way to experience the natural geological formations of the gorge. Starting from Unazuki Station, you can enjoy a gradual change in elevation and scenery, offering a much more intimate connection with nature than viewing the gorge solely from a train window.
The journey begins at Unazuki Station, the starting point for the Kurobe Gorge Railway. The area around the station is a lively hot spring town (onsen town) with many accommodations and restaurants. Near the end of the promenade, you will find facilities like "Tochinoyu," which is perfect for relaxing in a hot spring after your walk. You can also continue your journey deeper into the gorge using the Kurobe Gorge Railway to explore the wider area.
As the promenade is a natural environment with uneven terrain, tunnels, and old railway tracks, we highly recommend wearing sturdy sneakers or trekking shoes. Since temperatures can change inside the tunnels, it is wise to dress in layers. For photography, please ensure you do not obstruct the path for other travelers. To protect the environment, please follow the rule of carrying all your trash back with you and refrain from picking any plants.
