Yagi no Shidare-ume (Murakami Tei) is a premier spot for viewing plum blossoms located in Yagi Umawari, Minamiawaji City, Hyogo Prefecture. This site is known as an "Open Garden," where the private garden of the Murakami residence is opened to the public during the plum blossom season. The centerpiece is a colossal weeping plum tree, approximately 70 years old, standing 8 meters tall with a spread of 10 meters. From late February, the branches appear to overflow with light pink blossoms, creating a spectacular sight.
This location is designated as the 56th site of the "Awaji Hana Henro" (Flower Pilgrimage). The garden was meticulously crafted by the owner, Mr. Murakami, for his personal enjoyment, and he graciously opens it to the public to share its seasonal beauty. The site is frequently featured in media due to its significant natural landscape. Beyond the plum blossoms, the garden transitions through various seasonal blooms, such as Spiraea and Azaleas.
The primary attraction is the overwhelming scale of the weeping plum tree. The way the dense, light pink flowers hang from the branches creates a visual effect similar to a pink shower falling from the sky. Depending on the blooming stage, evening light-up events are held, allowing visitors to experience a completely different, ethereal atmosphere under the illumination. When the blossoms eventually fall, the ground becomes a beautiful carpet of pink petals.
The most recommended period is from late February to mid-March, with the peak usually occurring in early March. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to clearly appreciate the delicate colors and the unique shape of the branches. However, if the blooming status allows, the evening light-up sessions offer a magical experience. Following the plums, you can enjoy Spiraea in mid-March and Azaleas in early May.
The main activity is the tranquil appreciation of nature. Visitors can observe the seasonal scents and the vast architectural spread of the branches. As a site on the "Awaji Hana Henro" pilgrimage route, you can also participate in the cultural experience of collecting stamps. The stamp station is located along the road between the parking area and the Murakami residence.
Located in the lush, natural setting of Minamiawaji, this spot is a perfect addition to an Awaji Island sightseeing itinerary. Since the area is best explored by car, it is highly recommended to plan a driving route that incorporates other nearby natural scenic spots and seasonal plant cycles.
Please respect the natural environment and local privacy. As this is a private residence, strictly avoid entering any private zones. The parking area is an unpaved lot, which may become muddy after rain; therefore, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
