Yagami Castle is a medieval mountain castle located in Tanba-Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture. It is situated on Takajiro-yama (elevation 460m) and the neighboring Kokoji-yama (elevation 340m), positioned in the southern part of the Sasayama Basin. The site offers a strategic view overlooking the Yagami area, where the San'in Kaido-style routes once passed. The castle features a classic medieval structure where the main castle and branch castles are positioned around the castle town, and it is officially designated as a National Historic Site. Visitors can explore large-scale ruins that vividly illustrate the history of Japanese castle architecture.
The main castle served as the headquarters for the Hatano clan, a powerful local family in Tanba Province, during the medieval, Muromachi, and Sengoku periods. It is also known as 'Yagami Takajo.' Historical records even mention the castle being attacked and falling during the era of Akechi Mitsuhide. During the Edo period, Matsudaira Yasushige, a son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, resided here; however, the castle was eventually abandoned following the construction of Sasayama Castle as part of the national defense restructuring. Today, it is preserved as a vital historical site that conveys the legacy of medieval mountain fortifications.
The ruins of Yagami Castle are characterized by the preservation of typical medieval mountain castle structures, including kura (enclosures), stone walls, earthen embankments (dorui), and trenches (horikiri). While the central core shows some traces of later Sengoku-period renovations, the surrounding defensive structures (obi-kuruwa) maintain the older medieval style, utilizing the natural terrain to create a rugged, non-standardized layout. The castle employs a 'renkakushiki' (connected enclosure) design, allowing visitors to observe the complex, three-dimensional defensive architecture of a true mountain castle.
As a mountain castle, Yagami Castle offers a beautiful way to experience the changing seasons through its natural scenery. The landscape surrounding Takajiro-yama offers diverse expressions throughout the year. Please note that because these are historical ruins in a natural setting, the terrain can become unstable depending on the weather and season. While there are no specific seasonal events, the area is perfect for a peaceful nature walk.

By walking through the enclosures, embankments, and trenches, you can truly imagine the role this site once played as a defensive stronghold. Learning about the '縄張り' (layout/design) that utilizes the natural topography is a fascinating way to deepen your understanding of Japanese castle culture.
