Little World is a unique open-air museum located in Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, centered on the theme of "Human and Culture." More than just a display facility, it is a theme park-like space where you can intuitively learn about the diverse lives and cultures of the world through architecture and artifacts. With approximately 6,000 precious ethnographic items on display, it invites visitors on a journey into the unknown.
The most striking feature is the landscape of reconstructed houses that faithfully replicate architectural styles from around the globe. In addition to the exhibits in the main hall, the vast grounds are dotted with buildings that convey the cultures of various nations. As you walk through the site, you will feel as though you are traveling through different countries and regions with every step.
The facility aims to convey the history of how humans have built cultures and utilized tools and dwellings. The exhibits and buildings are not merely replicas; they reflect the unique history and lifestyle of each specific region. Through these near-authentic displays, visitors can learn how various ethnic groups have coexisted with nature and developed unique technologies and traditions. The highlights of Little World are divided into two main areas: the "Main Hall Exhibits" and the "Outdoor Exhibits." The Main Hall features displays focused on human evolution and technological development, offering a look at precious materials that trace the progress of mankind. Meanwhile, the outdoor areas recreate landscapes from across the globe. You can experience the architectural styles and living cultures of regions such as Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania. Stepping inside these reconstructed buildings allows you to truly feel the atmosphere of life in those specific lands.
Since Little World is designed to be explored on foot, you can enjoy the changing scenery of each season. The way the expressions of the buildings and the surrounding natural environment change with the seasons is part of the charm. For instance, on clear days, the contrast between the vibrant colors of the world's architecture and the blue sky is beautiful, making it an ideal spot for photography. The museum is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to observe the intricate details of the buildings and exhibits more clearly.
Beyond just viewing exhibits, the facility offers various ways to deeply engage with different cultures. A popular activity is trying on traditional ethnic costumes. Spending time in a reconstructed building while wearing the local attire makes for a special, time-traveling experience. Located in Inuyama, Aichi, Little World is surrounded by historical streets and other sightseeing spots. The Inuyama area is well-known for its rich history, making it easy to plan a route that continues your cultural journey after visiting the museum. Ending your "world trip" by enjoying the traditional Japanese scenery of the local area is highly recommended.
As the site is vast and requires significant walking, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable clothing and broken-in walking shoes. Since much of the exploration is outdoors, please prepare for the weather (such as bringing a parasol or rain gear). Please show respect toward the precious artifacts and buildings.
