Yaedake is a mountain rising 453.4 meters above sea level, located on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa. It is the second-highest peak on the main island of Okinawa and is celebrated as the highest point of the Motobu Peninsula. The primary attraction is the breathtaking avenue of approximately 7,000 Kanhi-zakura (Cold Pink Cherry Blossoms) planted along the 4-kilometer road leading to the summit. As blooming begins in late January, the entire mountain is dyed in a vivid scarlet hue, creating an iconic landscape that symbolizes the arrival of spring in Okinawa.
Beyond its natural beauty, Yaedake holds significant historical depth. The current cherry blossom avenue was shaped by a tree-planting project in 1963, supported by the Ryukyu-US Friendship Committee. The area also holds historical weight from the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, serving as a site of intense conflict between Japanese and American forces. Today, it has transitioned into a symbol of peace and nature. The region also has a history of indigo cultivation, adding another layer to its cultural evolution.
The highlight of Yaedake is undoubtedly the Kanhi-zakura avenue. The sight of continuous rows of bright pink blossoms stretching from the mid-mountain to the summit is truly spectacular. From the peak, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the northern Okinawa coastline, including the Kunigami Mountains, and beautiful nearby islands such as Ie Island, Sesoko Island, and Minna Island, all set against a deep blue sea. Additionally, the 'Yaedake Sakura-no-Mori Park' located halfway up the mountain offers rest areas and multi-purpose plazas, making it a comfortable environment for families.
The best time to visit Yaedake is from late January to March, when the Kanhi-zakura are in full bloom. The area becomes particularly lively starting in mid-January with the 'Motobu Yaedake Sakura Festival.' Because the summit is at a higher altitude, the temperature can be slightly lower than in the lowlands, which helps highlight the vivid colors of the blossoms. To fully enjoy the contrast between the scarlet flowers, the blue sky, and the ocean, we recommend visiting during bright daylight hours.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll through nature. A road leads directly toward the summit, allowing you to enjoy the cherry blossoms even from your car window. For those who prefer to walk, well-maintained trails through the natural forest allow you to experience the scenery on foot. The summit features a first-order triangulation point, making it a popular spot for light hiking, picnics, and family leisure. It is an ideal place to experience the rich ecosystem and stunning landscapes of Okinawa.
The area around Yaedake includes the 'Sakura-no-Mori Park,' managed by Motobu Town, which is well-equipped for family outings. The location is also conveniently located near major tourist sites like Ocean Expo Park, making it an easy addition to a northern Okinawa sightseeing itinerary. The scenic drive offers wonderful views of the surrounding islands, such as Ie and Sesoko, making it a popular route for road trips.
