Haji Dam, located in Akiota Town, Hiroshima Prefecture, is the first large-scale multi-purpose dam built on the upper reaches of the Gono River. The massive artificial lake created by the dam is known as "Yachiyo Lake," and its beautiful scenery attracts many visitors. The lakeside features "Nodogoe Park," which is well-equipped with grassy lawns and large playground equipment, providing a peaceful environment for rest and leisure amidst harmony with nature.
The dam was constructed for flood control of the Gono River and to provide water to central Hiroshima, including Hiroshima City and the Geiyo Islands. As a gravity concrete dam with a height of 50.0 meters, it serves as a vital water source for the region. Yachiyo Lake was named after the town of Yachiyo, which was the local municipality at the time of its construction. In 2005, it was selected as one of the "100 Best Dam Lakes" by the Dam Water Source Environment Development Center. Additionally, the related "Haji Dam Sports Land" received the Handcrafted Local Heritage Award in 1987, highlighting its deep cultural value to the community.
The greatest charm of Yachiyo Lake is the diverse natural scenery that changes with the seasons. In spring, it becomes one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Western Japan, with approximately 3,000 cherry trees blooming along the shore. In autumn, the surrounding foliage turns vibrant colors, offering beautiful autumn leaf viewing. Nodogoe Park, with its spacious lawns and playground, is an ideal spot for families to stroll and relax. The lake surface is exceptionally calm, making it a perfect backdrop for photography.
Spring (March–April) is the most spectacular season when the 3,000 cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Occasional nighttime illuminations offer a magical, dreamlike view different from the daytime scenery. Autumn (around November) is the best time for colorful foliage as the surrounding mountains change hues. Regardless of the season, visiting during bright daylight hours allows you to enjoy the beautiful contrast between the calm lake surface and the blue sky.
The area around Yachiyo Lake is a hub for various nature-filled activities. Due to its wide and calm waters, the area has been used as a venue for canoe competitions and practice. The surrounding area also features facilities for cycling, tennis, baseball, soccer, ground golf, and camping, allowing visitors to stay active in nature. The lakeside roads are also used for various marathons and sporting events.
There are many nature-rich leisure facilities near the dam. For example, the nearby "Hijiri Lake Campground" is a popular free campsite featuring spacious tent sites, cooking facilities, and an observation deck. You can also combine your visit with a historical tour to sites like "Yoshida Kurayama Castle," once the stronghold of the famous lord Mori Motonari, to enjoy both history and nature.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes when exploring the dam and park areas. While the park has lawns and play areas, some parts may have uneven natural terrain, so please watch your step.
