Ao no Domon is a spectacular natural rock tunnel located in the Yabakei area of Nakatsu, Oita Prefecture. Situated at the foot of the striking Kyoshu Peak overlooking the Yamakuni River, the structure spans approximately 342 meters, with the tunnel section itself measuring about 144 meters. It is a designated historical site of Oita Prefecture and a vital scenic landmark within the Yabakei-Hita Ebihikosan Quasi-National Park. The name "Ao" (Blue) is derived from the local district name. Historically known as "Hida no Kurinuki," the site became widely recognized by names like "Hida Tunnel" or "Ao no Domon" from the late Edo to the Taisho era. A 1906 guidebook, Yabakei Annai-ki, describes it as a mountain-carved passage, highlighting its long-standing importance as both a transit point and a scenic destination. Its historical significance is deeply rooted in the region's development and transport history.
