Washuzan is a mountain rising 133 meters above sea level, located in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. It is part of the Setonaikai National Park and is officially designated as a national scenic spot known as "Shimotsui Washuzan." The name is said to derive from its shape, which resembles an eagle spreading its wings when viewed from the northeast. An observation deck at the summit offers a spectacular view of the Seto Inland Sea islands and the full expanse of the Seto Ohashi Bridge. The landscape is a stunning harmony between natural geological formations and the modern engineering marvel of the bridge.
The region holds deep historical significance. The name has existed since the mid-Edo period, and the area saw significant railway and tourism development from the Meiji to Taisho eras. In 1930, it was designated as a national scenic spot. Furthermore, the presence of ancient burial mounds (kofun) scattered on the mountainside tells a story of human habitation dating back to antiquity. There is even a legend that the famous literary figure Tokutomi Soho once praised this landscape, naming it "Shoshuho" (a peak of exceptional beauty).
The primary attraction of Washuzan is the view from the summit and the second observation deck. From this high vantage point, you can see the Seto Ohashi Bridge stretching across the sea and the beautiful islands of the Shionoe Archipelago floating in the distance. Visitors can also explore the historical atmosphere by spotting the ancient burial mounds nestled in the landscape. To the west, the Washuzan Tunnel—the world's first double-decker tunnel structure—stands as a testament to advanced engineering integrated into the natural terrain.
While Washuzan is accessible year-round, the most pleasant times to visit are from March to May and September to November. The colors of the sea and the character of the sky change beautifully with the seasons. Daytime offers clear, sharp views of the bridge's massive structure, while the evening is perfect for watching the sky transform into vibrant hues of sunset over the Seto Inland Sea.
