The Wakura Onsen Summer Fireworks is a signature summer event held in the Wakura Onsen area of Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Wakura Onsen is a historic hot spring town, and the sight of fireworks illuminating the night sky against the nostalgic scenery of the hot spring district creates an unforgettable atmosphere. The highlight is the legendary 3-shaku-dama, a massive firework that offers a truly powerful and awe-inspiring experience. Wakura Onsen is a destination with a long-standing history. The summer fireworks have long been a cherished tradition, signaling the arrival of the season and bringing the community together. This event is deeply rooted in the local culture, where residents and visitors alike gather to celebrate the summer night. Please note that the event is scheduled to be canceled for 2025. Traditionally, it is a beloved seasonal event that marks the height of summer.
The most spectacular moment is the launch of the "3-shaku-dama." This massive shell, said to reach a diameter of 600m, creates a breathtaking display that is rare to witness. In addition to these giants, a variety of colorful fireworks, including star mines that launch in synchronization with music, will light up the sky. Since the fireworks are launched over the waters near Wakura Port, the reflections on the sea surface add an extra layer of beauty to the spectacle.
This event typically takes place during the summer months (June, July, or August). The displays usually begin around 7:00 PM. A classic way to enjoy this is to feel the cool summer breeze while watching the vivid colors emerge from the darkness. However, as the event is scheduled to be canceled in 2025, please check for the latest updates regarding future schedules and availability.
Beyond the fireworks, you can soak up the lively atmosphere of the hot spring town. Many food stalls (yatai) appear around the venue, offering classic Japanese summer treats such as yakisoba, okonomiyaki, takoyaki, and refreshing Ramune soda. If you are staying at a local ryokan, you can enjoy a private viewing from your room's window or balcony, or even watch the display while soaking in an outdoor hot spring bath.
The area around Wakura Onsen is lined with many prestigious traditional inns (ryokan) and hotels. The scenic coastline is beautiful, and many accommodations are located very close to Wakura Port, the launch site. For a different perspective, you can also view the fireworks from slightly further away, such as near Notojima Ohashi Bridge or Yuttari Park, which offer great views of the surrounding landscape.
Many food stalls and local shops around the venue primarily accept cash. It is helpful to carry small denominations and 1,000 yen notes for smooth transactions. Some larger facilities or shops may accept credit cards or IC cards.
While major facilities and many accommodations in the hot spring area offer English support, staff at the street food stalls may only speak Japanese. It is useful to have basic Japanese phrases or gestures ready.
If you wish to view the fireworks from a room with an ocean view or a specific viewing area, booking in advance is highly recommended. Popular ryokans with view-facing rooms tend to fill up very quickly.
As this is an outdoor summer event, lightweight, breathable clothing is best. Since the temperature can drop due to the sea breeze at night, bringing a light jacket or shawl is a good idea. We also recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes due to the expected crowds.
Photography is allowed, but please be aware that the use of tripods may be restricted in certain areas. Please be mindful of other guests and tourists by not blocking walkways while taking photos. Remember to take your trash home and respect the local community and the peaceful atmosphere of the hot spring town.
