Wajima Kobo Nagaya is a dedicated facility designed to share the profound beauty and heritage of Wajima-nuri, the world-renowned lacquerware from Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Visitors can engage in hands-on lacquerware making workshops, seek professional repair services for cherished items, and purchase high-quality lacquerware products. The facility itself is a work of art, featuring a traditional Japanese architectural style that creates a harmonious and serene atmosphere perfectly suited to the elegance of the lacquerware on display.
The history of this site is deeply tied to the resilience of the local community. Following a major fire in the Kawai-cho district of central Wajima in 1910, longhouses (nagaya) were constructed on the site of a relocated temple to provide housing for those who lost their homes. This area became a vibrant hub where many Wajima-nuri artisans resided, fostering the development of the region's unique industrial identity. While the original structures aged over time, the current Wajima Kobo Nagaya was established in 2003 to recreate and preserve this historic atmosphere and the bustling spirit of the past.
Inside the facility, you can learn about the intricate techniques and the unique properties of Japanese lacquer. The center features areas where you can observe the collection of exquisite lacquerware and watch artisans at work, offering a rare glimpse into the meticulous process of Japanese traditional aesthetics. The architecture itself is a highlight, with exposed wooden pillars, beams, and traditional wooden counters that provide a sense of timeless elegance.
The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours for lacquerware-making workshops or when consulting about repairs, as the natural light beautifully highlights the textures of the craft. The tranquil, traditional atmosphere is enjoyable in any season.
The centerpiece of the facility is the lacquerware-making experience. A typical workshop (e.g., approximately 2,000 JPY) allows you to try your hand at the craft, taking anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to complete. Additionally, the facility offers professional repair services for your beloved lacquerware, helping you preserve and continue using your precious items for generations to come.
Located in the Kawai-cho district of Wajima City, the facility is surrounded by traditional streetscapes. It is highly recommended to visit as part of a cultural route that explores the historical scenery and the deep-rooted culture of Wajima-nuri.
When participating in a workshop, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for delicate handwork. As you will be handling lacquer, please be mindful of your attire. Regarding photography, please ask a staff member for permission before taking photos inside the facility. While cash, credit cards, and transit IC cards may be accepted, please verify the exact payment methods on-site. For workshops, groups of up to 15 people can be accommodated; advance reservations are highly recommended to ensure availability.
