The Venus Line is a spectacular 76-kilometer scenic route stretching from Chino in the south to the Utsukushigahara Plateau in Ueda. The name is inspired by the way Mount Tateshina resembles a goddess. While once a toll road, the entire route is now free to use, making it a beloved destination for travelers. The route traverses the Yatsugatake Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park, passing through high-altitude plateaus including Shirabaka Lake, Kurumayama Plateau, and Kirigamine.
Originally planned as part of the 'Chushin Kogen Skyline' to connect Karuizawa and Kamikochi, the road was managed by the Nagano Prefectural Enterprise Bureau as a toll road. A gradual process of making the road free began in 1986, and by 2002, the entire route was opened to the public for free. Today, it stands as one of Japan's premier mountain sightseeing roads.
The Venus Line can be divided into four distinct sections. First is the Tateshina Plateau area from Chino to Shirabaka Lake; second is the Shirabaka Plateau/Kirigamine area leading to Kurumayama; third is the winding road section from Kirigamine to Ochiai Bridge; and finally, the ascent to the highest point at Utsukushigahara Plateau. Each area offers unique landscapes. At Kirigamine (approx. 1,650m) and Utsukushigahara (approx. 1,959m), you can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. Travelers can also experience the thrill of the continuous hairpin curves on the section leading toward Utsukushigahara from Wadakoji.
The Venus Line offers stunning natural beauty in every season, but please note that winter driving requires caution. The section between Yashomagahara Wetland parking and Utsukushigahara is closed for the winter season from late November to late April. From spring to autumn, it is an ideal route for a highland drive. In the Kirigamine area, you may even witness the breathtaking sight of a sea of clouds (unkai) during the early morning hours from spring to autumn.
Beyond driving, the area is perfect for trekking and highland leisure. Popular spots like Shirabaka Lake, Kurumayama Plateau, and Yashomagahara Wetland allow for immersive nature activities. The area also hosts cultural sites like the Utsukushigahara Open-Air Museum. Additionally, the route features a 'Melody Road,' a section designed to create musical notes as you drive over it.
Many tourist attractions and leisure facilities are scattered along the route, such as Tateshina Onsen, Shirabaka Lake, and the various plateaus. Nearby facilities like the Shirabika 2in1 Ski Resort and the Utsukushigahara Open-Air Museum make this an excellent destination for a full day trip. The route is easily accessible via the Suwa IC on the Chuo Expressway or from Chino Station on the JR Chuo Main Line.
Because you will be driving through high-altitude plateaus, be prepared for significant temperature drops. Temperatures can change rapidly depending on the season and time of day, so bringing a light jacket or extra layers is highly recommended. It is crucial to check road conditions in advance, especially regarding the winter closures (late November to late April). When visiting local facilities, please follow their specific rules and etiquette.
