Uzu no Michi is a unique 450-meter long circular walkway built within the structural space of the Onaroto Bridge, which spans the Naruto Strait in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture. While positioned high above the sea surface, the path features transparent glass windows in the floor, allowing visitors to observe the intense whirlpools created by the rapid currents of the Naruto Strait from a direct vantage point. This facility, which utilizes the actual architecture of the Onaroto Bridge, offers the sensation of walking above the ocean while providing a breathtaking visual experience of the dynamic natural phenomena below.
The Naruto Strait is world-renowned for its intense tidal currents, often compared to the Strait of Messina in Italy or the Seymour Narrows in Canada. For centuries, the whirlpools caused by the ebb and flow of the tides have been celebrated as a natural wonder of Japan. Uzu no Michi was developed using modern architectural techniques to bring this natural phenomenon closer to people, integrating the walkway into the Onaroto Bridge itself. This unique design allows visitors to feel the mechanics of the currents from a high, elevated perspective.
The highlight of the experience is looking down through the glass floor panels to see the whirlpools. During spring tides, the current speed can exceed 20 km/h, creating massive whirlpools with diameters of 20 to 30 meters. The path stretches 450 meters, offering a steady walk through the bridge's structure while enjoying the view. While the intensity and size of the whirlpools change depending on the season and the tide, the dynamic landscape of the Naruto Strait is always a spectacular sight.
The appearance of the whirlpools depends heavily on the tides. It is highly recommended to visit during the "Oshio" (spring tide) periods, when the currents are at their strongest and large-scale whirlpools are most frequent. We suggest checking a tide table (tide chart) to time your visit around high or low tide for the most dramatic displays. On clear, sunny days, the movement of the water and the clarity of the whirlpools are particularly vivid.
Visitors can enjoy a unique "sea walk" from a high vantage point. Peering through the transparent glass panels provides a thrilling sense of height and proximity to the water. For a deeper understanding, you can use a combined ticket with the nearby "Onaroto Bridge Memorial Hall (EDDY)" to learn about the bridge's engineering and the mechanics of the whirlpools. The area around Uzu no Michi includes Naruto Park and various scenic spots overlooking the Naruto Strait. Nearby facilities such as the Onaroto Bridge Memorial Hall (EDDY), the Naruto German House, and Esca Hill Naruto allow you to explore the natural and cultural aspects of the region. It is a perfect area to experience the unique natural environment of Tokoshima.
The path is a walking trail, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Payments can be made via cash or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc.). While English signage is available, please check with staff for detailed assistance. No advanced reservation is required for individuals, but groups are encouraged to check in advance. Photography through the glass windows is permitted, but please be mindful of other visitors.
