Utsunomiya Castle Site Park is a municipal park located in Honmaru-cho, Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture. It is situated on the former site of Utsunomiya Castle, which served as the seat of the Utsunomiya clan from the late Heian period. Although much of the original structure was lost due to modern urban development and wartime damage, several parts of the castle have been reconstructed based on archaeological excavations and historical records. The park covers approximately 37,000 m² and serves as a disaster prevention park and evacuation site.
Utsunomiya Castle is historically significant as one of the Seven Famous Castles of the Kanto region. During the early modern period, it underwent significant expansion under the direction of Honda Masazumi, developing into a large-scale castle complex spanning roughly 4km square. However, much of the original structure was lost to modern warfare and urban development. While only parts of the Honmaru earthen ramparts remained during the mid-20th century, the park was revitalized through the construction of the Seimeikan historical museum and subsequent renovations. The park currently serves as a vital cultural site for preserving and teaching local history.
