Utsukushimori is a scenic hill located at an altitude of 1,542 meters in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Situated to the east of Mt. Aka, this area is renowned as a beautiful natural landscape that becomes vibrantly colorful during early summer. The summit features an observation deck that allows visitors to gaze out over the surrounding mountain ranges. At the base, there is a free parking lot and a tourist information center. The hiking trails are well-maintained, making it possible to reach the summit in a relatively short amount of time.
The topography of this area is characterized by a landform that was once part of the eastern ridge of Mt. Aka. While it appears as a gentle, rounded hill, it maintains a rich natural environment as part of the surrounding mountain range. The area is also home to natural treasures such as the Oyamatsutsuji (large mountain azalea), which is a designated national natural monument. As one of the "Kai Hyakusan" (100 Mountains of Kai), this location has long been cherished by locals and visitors alike as a place to enjoy the splendor of nature.
The most striking feature of Utsukushimori is the seasonal transformation of its flora. From early to mid-June, approximately 1,000 Renge Tsutsuji (Japanese Azalea) flowers bloom in full force. The sight of the hillside dyed in brilliant orange is a unique spectacle found only during this period. Additionally, the summit observatory offers a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view. On clear days, you can see the Kiyosato Plateau, the Southern Alps, the Yatsugatake Mountains, and even distant peaks on the horizon.
The most recommended time to visit is from May to June. Specifically, the peak viewing period for the Renge Tsutsuji flowers is from early June to mid-June. Visiting during this window ensures you witness the flowers in full bloom. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours of a sunny day, as visibility is excellent, allowing for a clear view of the ridgelines of the Southern Alps and Yatsugatake.
The hike to the summit takes approximately 15 minutes on foot, making it an accessible trail even for beginners. As you walk the well-maintained paths, you can observe the unique local vegetation and terrain. At the summit, you can enjoy the high-altitude panoramic views and immerse yourself in the natural environment. For more experienced hikers, there are routes that connect through the Shinkyo-ji ridge toward Mt. Aka for a more serious climbing experience.
The base of Utsukushimori is surrounded by the scenic Kiyosato Plateau and Kobuchizawa areas. This region is dotted with various tourist facilities, accommodations, and restaurants, allowing you to enjoy local gourmet food alongside your nature walks. Since the area is easily accessible by car, it is often included as a key stop in driving itineraries through the region.
When hiking, please wear comfortable clothing and shoes with good grip to prevent slipping. As temperatures can drop near the summit, bringing a light, adjustable jacket is highly recommended. Regarding payments, please check with local facilities in advance regarding the use of cash, credit cards, or IC cards. While the observatory and trails are open at all times, please respect the environment by taking all trash home with you and strictly adhering to the rule of no plant collection.
