Mount Usu is an active volcano with an elevation of 733 meters, situated south of Lake Toya in Hokkaido. Located within the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, it is known as an active volcano under constant observation. By using the ropeway, you can easily access the area near the summit to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view that overlooks Lake Toya, Uchibura Bay (Funka Bay), and even the Pacific Ocean.
The name 'Usu' is derived from the Ainu word 'us' (meaning inlet/bay). The current mountain structure consists of a main volcano with a 1.8km diameter outer rim, several lava domes, and parasitic cones such as Mt. Donkoro. Volcanic activity occurs periodically, and the current landscape has been shaped through a history of crustal movements and eruptions. The surrounding area also functions as a Geopark, where visitors can experience the coexistence of human life and volcanic activity.
Mount Usu offers excellent facilities for learning about volcanic mechanisms and history. At the 'Volcano Village' located at the base station, the 'Eruption Experience Room' uses sound, light, and video to recreate an eruption, allowing you to experience the movement of magma beneath the earth. Additionally, at the summit station and various locations, the 'Mount Usu Eruption Story' educational panels provide a visual way to learn about the volcano's history. From the ropeway, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Lake Toya from a high vantage point.
While Mount Usu can be visited year-round, the scenery changes with the seasons. From spring to autumn, the contrast between the lush greenery and the blue lake water is beautiful, making the ropeway ride very comfortable. In winter, you can enjoy a stunning snowy panorama. Please note that the outer rim walking trails are closed from November to April due to snow and ice, so we recommend checking the latest operational status before your visit.
In addition to the scenic ropeway ride, you can engage in educational experiences regarding volcanic history. Near the summit, the 'Mount Usu Outer Rim Walking Trail' is available for a trek of approximately 1.1km (about 40–50 minutes one way). Walking this path toward the Mount Usu Outer Rim Observatory allows for a detailed observation of the crater and the surrounding natural landscape. You can also enjoy food and breaks at the facilities within the Volcano Village.
Various tourist facilities are clustered at the foot of Mount Usu. At the base station's 'Volcano Village,' you will find the 'Usuzan Shokudo Funkatei' and 'Cafe Mt. USU' for light meals and snacks, as well as the 'Oyama no Mise Shinzan-do' for souvenirs. The surrounding area also features walking paths near the Nishiyama crater and remains of structures damaged by crustal movements, offering a chance to observe how volcanic activity changes the landscape.
