Ushiro no Mizume Sakura is a single Edohigan cherry tree located in Kawane, Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture, with an estimated age of 300 years. Due to its significant historical value, it has been designated as a municipal natural monument. The tree is characterized by its solitary, striking presence on a gentle hill, surrounded by lush natural-scenery. The Edohigan variety produces delicate white blossoms, presenting a different, enchanting expression to the landscape with each passing season.
While there are no definitive historical records regarding the exact origin of the name "Mizume Sakura," the tree has been a beloved local landmark since the Edo period. This Edohigan specimen features a trunk circumference of 4.23 meters and reaches a height of 20.00 meters. Today, the tree is carefully preserved by the "Ushiro no Mizume Sakura Protection Society," serving as a precious piece of local natural heritage.
The greatest draw is the sight of this solitary cherry tree standing proudly against the surrounding landscape. A particularly magical moment occurs in the early morning, when the rising sun shines directly onto the blossoms, illuminating the tree in a golden glow. Additionally, during the peak blooming season, nighttime illuminations are often held, allowing visitors to witness the ethereal silhouette of the tree floating in the darkness. There are also vantage points across the way that offer excellent angles for capturing the tree's full, majestic shape.
The primary season to visit is from March to April, coinciding with the blooming period. Because the scenery changes dramatically depending on the time of day, we highly recommend visiting in the early morning to witness the sunlight hitting the blossoms. If you visit during the blooming season, you can also enjoy the mystical atmosphere of the nighttime illuminations. Please note that when visiting during the early morning or late at night, it is important to be mindful of the local environment and surroundings.
