Ushibuka Haiya Ohashi is an 883m long, 13.6m wide bridge spanning Ushibuka Bay in Amakusa, Kumamoto. It is one of the longest and most significant bridges in the prefecture, designed not merely as a transport link but as a piece of architectural art that integrates with the landscape. The design team includes world-famous architect Renzo Piano, structural engineer Peter Rice, and Kenmei Okabe. The concept, "a single line floating on the sea," results in a minimalist, smooth curve that blends perfectly into the natural environment.
Built under the 'Kumamoto Art Polis' project, the bridge's name, 'Haiya,' is derived from the traditional local folk song, 'Ushibuka Haiya Bushi.' Completed after construction between 1991 and 1997, it has become a symbol of the region. The bridge's exceptional design has earned numerous accolades, including the Tanaka Prize from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, representing a successful fusion of infrastructure, local culture, and art.
The most striking feature is its unique '7-span continuous steel plate girder' structure. The design separates the roadway from the pedestrian and cycling paths by height, allowing visitors to stroll while looking down at the ocean.
