Urasoe O Park is a vast recreational space located in Urasoe City, Okinawa. It seamlessly combines natural beauty with historical elements and leisure activities. Situated at an elevation of 130 meters, the park is famous for its 360-degree panoramic views overlooking the East China Sea and the surrounding urban landscape. It is a versatile destination that appeals to families looking for outdoor fun and travelers eager to experience the deep history of Okinawa.
The park preserves significant historical sites that tell the story of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The "History Learning Zone" features the ruins of Urasoe Castle, believed to have been constructed in the late 14th century. As a vital stronghold for the Ryukyu Kingdom, the site contains stone walls and gates that showcase the architectural techniques and culture of that era. Additionally, the area includes sites of high historical value, such as the Urasoe Yodore, which is closely associated with important figures of the Ryukyu Kingdom like King Eku and King Sho Nei.
The park is divided into three distinct themed zones. First, the observatory at 130m elevation provides a breathtaking vantage point for viewing the East China Sea. Second, the "Interaction Plaza Zone" is perfect for children, featuring large roller sliders and a playground with soft rubber flooring for safety. Third, the "History Learning Zone" allows visitors to explore castle ruins and ancient tombs to learn about the Ryukyu Kingdom. Finally, the "Relaxation Zone" features the "Toyama Ishidatami-michi" (Stone Paved Path) near the Makiminato River, offering a scenic blend of nature and culture.
While the park is open year-round, it offers different charms depending on the season. From February to April, the landscape is particularly beautiful with blooming cherry blossoms and plum blossoms. The best time to visit the observatory is during the day for clear views, but visiting in the late afternoon allows you to witness a spectacular sunset over the East China Sea. The park also hosts periodic seasonal events and community gatherings.
Beyond sightseeing, the park is a hub for active recreation. You can enjoy the large-scale playground equipment or take a peaceful stroll through the natural paths. For a taste of local culture, visit "Ishigufu," an Okinawa Soba restaurant located on the first floor of the observatory, where you can dine while enjoying the view. The park also occasionally hosts educational workshops, such as insect origami classes or stargazing events, providing a hands-on way to learn about nature and culture. Using the well-maintained walking paths and benches makes it an ideal spot for a relaxing picnic.
Located near the Urasoe Municipal Stadium, a well-known site for professional baseball spring training, the park is a great stop for sports fans. Every February, the Tokyo Yakult Swallows hold their training camp here, making it a popular destination for baseball enthusiasts. The park is easily accessible, located approximately 25 minutes by car from Naha City, making it a convenient stop during an Okinawa sightseeing itinerary.
The park covers a large area with significant changes in elevation. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. As there are stairs and slopes to access the observatory and various zones, please prepare accordingly. Benches and gazebos are available throughout the park for resting. For those traveling by car, there is a large parking lot with capacity for 250 vehicles.
