The Urako Coast is a breathtaking rias coastline stretching approximately 15 km, located in Iwami Town, Iwami District, Tottori Prefecture. The landscape is defined by a dynamic series of steep cliffs, various small islands, and sea caves carved by the powerful waves of the Sea of Japan. As part of the San'in Kaigan Geopark, this area is often described as a 'museum of landforms and geology' due to the incredible concentration of natural geological beauty. A well-maintained 3 km walking trail allows visitors to observe the stunning coastal scenery from land as well as from the sea.
This area is a natural heritage site formed over countless years through the process of marine erosion. The complex coastline is a testament to the raw power of nature. Historically, the surrounding waters have been a vital site for fishing. In the summer, you can witness a unique cultural landscape: the 'Isaribi' (fishing lights) used during the squid fishing season, where the lights flicker across the dark sea, blending human tradition with the natural environment.
The greatest charm of the Urako Coast lies in its intricate coastline and the deep cobalt blue of its transparent waters. From the coastal walking paths, you can enjoy the striking contrast between the white sandy beaches and the lush green pine trees. The glass-bottom boats allow you to observe the vibrant marine life and the seabed directly beneath you.
