Upopoy (National Ainu Museum and Park) is a national center located in Shirao, Hokkaido, dedicated to the revitalization, creation, and development of Ainu culture. The name "Upopoy" means "to sing together" in the Ainu language, symbolizing a space where people gather to learn and pass traditions to the next generation.
This facility is more than just a museum; it is a vast complex comprising the National Ainu Museum, the National Ainu Culture Park, and memorial facilities. Visitors can explore the history, unique spiritual world, and traditional lifestyles of the Ainu through diverse methods: exhibitions, live demonstrations, hands-on experiences, and the surrounding natural environment. It serves as a vital hub for presenting the dignity of the Ainu people and a society where diverse cultures coexist.
Promoting Ainu culture has faced challenges such as the decline of traditional knowledge-holders and the threat to the Ainu language and crafts. To address this, the "National Ainu Museum and Park" was developed to honor the Ainu as an indigenous people and to ensure the preservation of their heritage. Following the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and domestic recognition of the Ainu, this project was established to protect and share their way of life with the world.
Upopoy offers different charms throughout the seasons. The park area is particularly stunning from the fresh greenery of spring to the vibrant colors of autumn.
The true charm of Upopoy lies in active participation. There are over 20 types of Ainu cultural programs held daily, ranging from traditional craft-making to learning Ainu music and dance. These activities allow you to touch the essence of the Ainu spirit. You can also find modern items inspired by traditional Ainu patterns at the onsite shop.
Near Shirao, you can enjoy more of Hokkaido's natural and culinary delights. Shirao Town is famous for its high-quality beef (Shiroko Beef). Additionally, the famous Noboribetsu Onsen is a short drive away, making it a perfect way to relax after your cultural journey. A drive to the beautiful Lake Shikotsu or Lake Toya is also highly recommended.
