Uonotana Shopping Street is a vibrant commercial district in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture, serving as the local kitchen for the surrounding area. This 350-meter-long arcade is home to over 100 shops specializing in fresh seafood, processed goods, and dried delicacies. The area is particularly famous for its abundance of fresh catches from the Akashi Strait and Harima Nada Sea, featuring premium ingredients like Akashi sea bream and Akashi octopus. The tiled walkways reflect the lively atmosphere of a traditional Japanese fish market.
The history of this area dates back to the town planning during the construction of Akashi Castle in 1618. Originally divided into Higashiuomachi (focused on fresh fish) and Nishiuomachi (focused on dried goods), the district evolved through various changes, including a major fire in 1949. The current arcade structure was completed in 1961, and a renovation in 1987 updated the flooring from asphalt to the current durable tiles. Today, it remains a vital hub for preserving and celebrating the local culinary heritage of Akoshi.

The shopping street is filled with fishmongers offering the freshest seafood caught right in the Akashi sea. You can see premium ingredients like Akashi sea bream and Akashi octopus firsthand. Additionally, many shops serve the famous "Akashi-yaki" (savory batter balls), a signature local dish that represents the region's food culture. During the day, the arcade is a pedestrian-friendly zone, allowing you to stroll safely while exploring the many local stalls.
The market is at its most energetic during the bright daylight hours, which is the best time for shopping for fresh ingredients or enjoying a meal. Depending on the season, you may see increased activity during specific times, such as the opening of the spring sand lance (inago) fishing season. As the afternoon progresses toward closing time, the pace of the market shifts. For the best experience in terms of ingredient freshness and lively atmosphere, a daytime visit is highly recommended.

The primary experience at Uonotana is the chance to purchase high-quality local ingredients. You can select from fresh seafood, processed fish products, and various dried goods. Tasting local specialties like Akashi-yaki is also a must-do activity. Immersing yourself in the sounds of the shopkeepers' calls and the bustling market energy provides a true sense of the local way of life.
The shopping street is connected to the Akashi Ginza-dori and Honmachi shopping districts via arcades, forming a seamless sightseeing route. With easy access from Akashi Station, it is also conveniently located near historical sites like the Akashi Castle ruins.
For a comfortable stroll, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. The tiled flooring is easy to walk on, but please be cautious as it may become slippery during rainy weather. While some shops may accept credit cards or electronic money, many smaller vendors may require cash, so carrying Japanese Yen is advisable. English support and signage vary by shop. When taking photos, please remember to ask for permission from the shopkeepers first.
