Unryu-in is a prestigious temple of the Shingon sect, specifically the Sennyu-ji school, and is celebrated as the 40th temple of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Known by its mountain name Rurizan, the temple holds a profound and historic connection to the Japanese Imperial Family. The main hall, known as "Ryoke-den," is designated as an Important Cultural Property. As a high-ranking temple with close ties to the Imperial Court, it has been frequently visited by successive Emperors.
