Umihotaru Parking Area is a one-of-a-kind facility located on an artificial island in the middle of Tokyo Bay, connecting the Kawasaki and Kisarazu sides of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. Surrounded 360 degrees by the sea, it offers the unique sensation of being on a floating island. The observation decks provide a vast, panoramic view of Tokyo Bay, making it a popular destination for both a quick driving break and a sightseeing excursion. With restaurants, shops, foot baths, and amusement areas, you can fully enjoy your stay.
The Kisarazu artificial island was constructed to connect the undersea tunnel and the bridge sections of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. The name "Umihotaru" (Sea Firefly) was chosen through a public naming contest and carries the poetic meaning of a "light floating on the sea." This theme is reflected in the facility's mascot and design elements found throughout the area. Furthermore, the night views here are officially recognized as part of the "Japan Nightscape Heritage," highlighting its significant cultural and scenic value as a glowing island in the dark sea.
There are many highlights to explore at Umihotaru. The most iconic feature is the 360-degree observation deck, which offers an immersive connection to the ocean. On clear days, you can see far into the distance. On the 1st floor, you can see the "Cutter Face," a massive monument that serves as a piece of history from the construction of the undersea tunnel. The 4th floor features the "Great Corridor with Sea Views," allowing you to enjoy the scenery regardless of the weather. At night, the facility transforms with romantic blue illuminations, creating a completely different atmosphere than during the day.
The atmosphere changes dramatically depending on the time of day. During the day, the contrast between the blue sea and sky creates a sense of openness. At sunset, the landscape becomes incredibly dramatic as the sun dips below the horizon. At night, the facility lights up with beautiful illuminations worthy of its "Nightscape Heritage" status, creating a magical, glowing island effect. Regardless of the season, stopping by during a night drive is a highly recommended way to encounter a truly special view.
Umihotaru offers much more than just a place to rest. For example, you can relax at the foot bath on the 4th floor while gazing at the ocean (please note that operating hours may vary by day). On the 5th floor, "Umi Megane ~Aqua Line Theater~" allows you to learn about the charm of Tokyo Bay through visual media. The facility is also family-friendly, featuring a "KID'S SPACE," various photo-op objects, and animal-themed art benches. You can enjoy dining, shopping, and relaxation while feeling the sea breeze.
Umihotaru serves as a central hub connecting the Kawasaki side (Kanagawa Prefecture) and the Kisarazu side (Chiba Prefecture) via the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. The route consists of an undersea tunnel toward Kawasaki and a bridge toward Kisarazu. It is a major landmark on the route between Tokyo and Chiba, making it a perfect destination in itself rather than just a rest stop. It also provides excellent access to the Boso Peninsula in Chiba for scenic drives.
As this is an artificial island in the middle of the ocean, please be aware that weather and wind can be unpredictable. The sea breeze can be strong, and temperatures may feel much lower than on land, so bringing a jacket or extra layers is highly recommended. The use of drones is strictly prohibited. While photography for personal enjoyment is encouraged, please follow all facility rules. The facility is largely barrier-free and accessible for wheelchairs, but please be mindful of other pedestrians and vehicles while moving around.
