Umoregino-ya is a nationally designated Special Historic Site located in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. This site is renowned as the place where Naosuke Ii, who later served as the Great Senior Councilor (Tairo) of the Edo Shogunate and played a pivotal role in the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States, spent his youth. The site is a precious historical landmark that preserves the architectural styles and cultural atmosphere of the period.
Naosuke Ii eventually became the 13th Lord of the Hikone Domain, but the time he spent at this residence was marked by significant challenges. The name "Umoregino-ya" (meaning a tree buried in the ground) symbolizes his circumstances at the time, suggesting a period of being hidden or suppressed. However, the experiences gained here are said to have laid the foundation for his later political leadership and his deep cultural refinement, including his mastery of the Way of Tea (Chanoyu).
The grounds are dotted with buildings that showcase traditional Japanese architectural styles.
