Umaji Shinrin Tetsudo is a sightseeing railway located in Umaji Village, Kochi Prefecture, which carries on the legacy of the historic Yanase Forest Railway. The train features a diesel locomotive that is a 2/3 scale replica of a Porter steam engine, pulling passenger cars through a scenic landscape. A standout feature of this railway is its commitment to sustainability: the locomotive runs on bio-fuel produced from recycled cooking oil collected within the village. The journey consists of two loops around a 300m course, offering an intimate view of the Nishitaniyagawa River area.
The region was once home to the Yanase Forest Railway, one of the most significant forest railways in Japan. From the Meiji to the Taisho eras, this network served as the primary artery for transporting forest resources, making it the largest forest railway network in Kochi Prefecture. By 1911, the tracks connecting Tano to Umaji were completed, driving local development. Historically, the railway adapted to the rugged terrain using gravity-based descents and even had trolleys pulled by cattle or dogs. While its industrial role has ended, the railway now serves as a living museum of this history.
The main highlight is the sight of the replica diesel locomotive in motion. The detailed, scaled-down design of the original Porter steam engine is a treasure for both railway enthusiasts and history buffs. The Umaji Shinrin Tetsudo primarily operates on Sundays and public holidays. There are also limited runs on specific dates in April. Operating hours are from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Please note that service is highly weather-dependent; the train may be canceled in the event of rain. It is highly recommended to check the weather and operation status before your trip.
