Ukido (Mangetsu-ji Temple) is a Buddhist temple located on the shores of Lake Biwa in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. It is celebrated as one of the 'Eight Views of Omi,' specifically the scene known as 'Katata no Rakugan.' The temple's most striking feature is its appearance of floating upon the lake. The current structure was rebuilt in 1937 and underwent further repairs in 1982. Within its grounds, you can find the Sacred Kannon Statue, an Important Cultural Property, set against a harmonious landscape of historic architecture and natural beauty.
The history of this temple dates back to the Heian period. Legend says it was established by the monk Echishin to pray for safety on the lake and the salvation of all living beings. The name 'Ukido' literally means 'Floating Hall,' a reference to its unique location that makes it look as if it is floating on the water. The temple's mountain name is Kaimon-zan Mangetsu-ji. The area is also home to a monument dedicated to the poet Amano Seishu, who wrote about the scenery of the early summer rain, reflecting the long-standing connection between this site and literature.
The primary attraction is the Sacred Kannon Statue, an Important Cultural Property housed within the Kannon-do hall. The architectural beauty of the temple itself is a major draw, offering a close-up view of its intricate design alongside the breathtaking view of the lake. Near the Sanmon gate, you will find a monument for Amano Seishu, which commemorates the beauty of Ukido during the seasonal rains, allowing visitors to trace the literary history of the region.
