The Ueyama Rice Terraces (Ueyama no Tahada) are located in the Odai district of Kami Town, Mykata District, Hyogo Prefecture. This site is a quintessential symbol of Japan's traditional rural landscape and has been officially selected as one of the "100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The landscape is characterized by the striking, rhythmic curves of the ridges (aze) that follow the natural contours of the mountain slopes, offering an expansive and open view. Built upon a unique landform known as a landslide area, these terraces represent a beautiful harmony between human ingenuity and the natural environment.
This area tells a deep story of Japanese agricultural history and culture. Notably, it is the birthplace of the legendary bull "Tajiri-go," whose lineage is linked to nearly all high-quality Black Wagyu cattle in Japan. Agriculture here is more than just food production; it is a core part of the local identity. The landscape is also a symbol of the Kami Town Odai area, which is a member of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Japan" association. The maintenance of these terraces is supported by the local community through agricultural experiences, direct sales of rice, and various cultural exchange events, ensuring that this heritage is passed down to future generations.
The greatest draw is the geometric beauty of the rice terraces. The curved lines created by the layered ridges are a masterpiece of landscape design that utilizes the natural terrain, making it a highly acclaimed spot for landscape photographers. Additionally, the area is part of the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark, offering a fascinating geological perspective as the terraces are built upon a specific landslide topography. The scenery changes beautifully with every season, offering new discoveries every time you visit.
The most spectacular time to visit is when the fields are filled with water or when the rice is growing. From May to June, the terraces are filled with water, creating a stunning "water mirror" (mizukagami) effect that reflects the sky and surrounding mountains—this is the peak season for photography. For the best colors and clarity, we recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours. To capture the dramatic contrast between the mountains and the terraces, the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer and more directional is ideal.
Visitors can engage with the local culture through various activities. The community often hosts agricultural experiences to teach the significance of rice farming, as well as events for direct sales of locally harvested rice. Beyond the scenery, you can experience the heart of Japanese rural life. The surrounding area also features several campgrounds and hot spring facilities, allowing you to enjoy a relaxing stay surrounded by nature.

You can relax at the Ojiro Onsen hot spring facility or enjoy seasonal activities at the Ojiro Ski Resort. The area around the terraces includes unpaved paths and uneven, sloping terrain. We strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for light hiking. When taking photos, please be mindful not to disturb local farmers working in the fields. Please note that the area is a natural landscape with steps and slopes.
