Ueno Onshi Park is a historic metropolitan park with a legacy dating back to 1873, when it was designated as one of Japan's first public parks. Spanning approximately 530,000 square meters, the park is composed of the Ueno highland and the scenic Shinobazu Pond. It serves as a vital cultural hub, housing a dense concentration of world-class museums, art galleries, and the Ueno Zoo. The area was originally the grounds of the Kan'ei-ji Temple during the Edo period. Following the Meiji Restoration, the land became state-owned property. The name "Onshi" (meaning "Imperial Gift") was bestowed after the land was gifted to the city of Tokyo via the Imperial Ministry in 1924. The park celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2023. Today, it continues to undergo revitalization and maintenance projects to ensure its role as a cornerstone of Tokyo's cultural and tourism landscape.
The park features a diverse range of flora and landscapes. Notable botanical highlights include approximately 1,200 cherry blossom trees (Sakura), as well as ginkgo, Japanese camphor, and zelkova trees. The seasonal beauty of the lotus flowers in Shinobazu Pond is also a major draw. The landscape harmoniously blends natural elements with man-made structures, such as wide paved plazas and fountain areas. Additionally, the high concentration of museums and galleries allows visitors to experience deep insights into both fine arts and natural sciences.
The park is open daily from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM, allowing for early morning walks or peaceful evening strolls. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: the cherry blossoms (Sakura) in spring, the lush greenery of summer, and the vibrant colors of the autumn leaves. The lotus flowers in Shinobazu Pond offer a stunning view during their blooming season.
